The Ramblings of a Madman
Traveling around, I get the question often about fuel economy. I am not too sure of the motivation for this type of question. Further, it took me a while to get solid data to answer this question correctly. You see, on my trips this summer it appeared that this was having a great impact on my MPGs. However, after 6,000 miles of faithful recording my fuel consumption, I do not believe that this trailer had that great of an impact on how much fuel was consumed. Absolutely, it used more fuel than an empty motorcycle, but only about 20% more. Or said another way, about $9 a day given my average travel between campgrounds. Without the trailer my trike averages around 25 miles per gallon. I know, that sounds high to my two-wheeled friends. In fact, compared to my Street Glide, having a third wheel has a far greater impact on fuel economy than towing a trailer. On my trip I thought about a million ways to make my trailer lighter and more aerodynamic. But there really is no cost benefit for me to make those changes. With that said, I believe that when I build its replacement, I will still attempt to achieve those goals.
